SUMMARY:WOMEN (UN)SILENCED at Black Wall Street Gallery in Greenwood – Curated by Emily McEwan-Upright – Gallery 1202 - limited "drop-in" capacity
DESCRIPTION:This show seeks to challenge our audience to adjust and question their perspective on issues such as mental health\, misogyny\, racism\, culture and gender by using the female figure as a tool in their respective medium. Depicted in a variety of mediums including photography\, painting\, digital illustration and textiles\, the artists place female subjects into alternative narratives forcing the audience to reimagine these women through a different lens\, which empowers both the subject and the artist. \n\n\n\nAtlanta-based portrait photographer Tokie Rome-Taylor uses Creolization\, portraiture and material culture to create an alternative narrative for southern women in a time when they had no rights or control over their bodies or lives. Samantha Viotty is a Washington D.C. based digital illustrator who focuses on identity and social issues in her work. Charica Daugherty\, who is our inaugural artist-in-residence\, is an oil painter who has recently begun a series of works exploring historical and biblical women figures. In this series\, she relies on primary documents to visualize her characters and\, in many cases\, their bi-racial ethnicity. This show also features works by Abi Salami\, Patricia Montgomery\, and Aimée Everett. We’ll provide their bios in a later post. We want to thank Emily for curating such an incredible show. We love it and we hope you do too! All works of art are for sale!
